Job Summary

Duration:
Temporary Externally Funded Non Grant-in-Aid contract post, the indicative duration of which is 48 months, subject to contract.  A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.

 

Basic Function:

Teagasc seeks to appoint a Technologist who will join a research team in the ‘Meat Technology Ireland’ EI Technology Centre to carry out work focused on enhancing the shelf-life, quality and safety of fresh lamb
This post will be based in the Food Safety Department at Teagasc Food Research Centre, Ashtown, Dublin 15. The post will be carried out as part of the Meat Technology Ireland Centre (MTI). MTI is a unique project, co-funded by Enterprise Ireland, industry and hosted by Teagasc, in collaboration with ICBF, UCC, DCU, IMR, TUS, MTU and TU Dublin. This project is building a strategic research and innovation base in beef and sheep meat processing in Ireland. The technologist will work as part of a multi-disciplinary research team which is focused on enhancing the shelf-life and safety of fresh lamb. The technical work to be carried out will focus on microbiological and meat quality assessments, underpinning research on changes/interventions to current meat processing, packaging and storage practices to extend shelf life, and enhance lamb safety and quality.

 

Background:

While reporting to the hiring manager, the successful candidate will work directly with the MTI Research & Innovation Project Manager and participating company leads, to ensure research outputs from the project are seamlessly transferred and embedded in the MTI member companies. The candidate will be required to act within the MTI Memorandum of Understanding governing the management of confidential information. The candidate will be contribute to identifying opportunities and formulating solutions to facilitate progress for the participant companies and researchers involved.

Job Objectives

 

  • To contribute to experimental design and planning.

  • To conduct a range of microbiological analysis.

  • To conduct a range of meat quality analysis.

  • Collaborate with sheep meat processors and conduct in-factory sampling.

  • Collaborate with research project partners.

  • Collate and analyses data outputs.

  • Contribute to dissemination of data in oral and written formats.

  • Assist MTI Research and Innovation Project Manager in directing the assigned MTI projects.

  • Report and discuss progress updates with the MTI Director and participate where required in the Research Project Management Group (RPMG).

  • To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.

  • To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.

  • Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.

  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must have a QQI Level 8 degree in microbiology or a related discipline.

 

  • A postgraduate degree and/or research experience in Food Microbiology or Food Science and
    Technology would be a distinct advantage.

  • Proven record of scientific communications.

 

  • Aptitude for working as part of a multidisciplinary project team.

  • Aptitude for multidisciplinary approaches.

 

Knowledge

  • Broad knowledge on food
    safety, microbial spoilage and shelf life

 

  • Knowledge of lamb production and processing

Other

As this role will involve driving vehicles, candidates must satisfy and continue to satisfy during employment with Teagasc, legal requirements to drive a car unaccompanied on Irish public roads.

Eligibility This is an open public competition. Should a current serving Teagasc staff member be successful in their application through open public competition for this post, their current contract of employment with Teagasc will come to an end on taking up this post.
