Forestry Advisor

Job Summary

Duration:
Temporary externally funded non Grant-in-Aid contract post, the indicative duration of which is 24 months, subject to contract.  A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 2 years.

 

Basic Function:

The provision of independent and objective advice, training and developmental supports to forest owners and those considering forestry in the region through the provision of technical, financial and sustainability advice and training in relation to decision making regarding  forest establishment and  management. This is provided in collaboration with a range of stakeholders. 

 

Background:

The appointee will provide objective and independent promotional, advisory, training and development support to forest owners in the region. This will be provided in line with the Forestry Development Department Business Plan. Job Objectives

 

  • To develop and deliver on the agreed business plan as part of a national team of forestry advisers and in conjunction with the area-based Teagasc advisory service.

  • To maintain a high and professional profile for the Teagasc forestry advisory service through actively contributing to local activities, regional and national events, publications and public relations.

  • To use a range of effective advisory methodologies including discussion group facilitation as part of an enterprise team to achieve technology transfer and sustainable client development

  • To assist clients in the analysis & planning of their farm business in systems of production varying from organic to intensive

  • To assist clients in the change processes necessary arising from a changing agriculture

  • To co-ordinate referrals from the Options Programme for clients

  • To facilitate clients in the analysis and planning of succession and inheritance

  • To assist clients in the facilitation and participation in EU and National Schemes including the new Basic Payment Scheme

  • To maintain responsibility for own development and updating through active participation in PMDS

  • To assist management and administrative staff in achieving good governance and risk management through co-operation and adherence to administrative procedures and practices

  • To support farmers/landowners in making informed decisions on land use, assisting in the analysis and planning of new forest creation projects To assist forest owners in the analysis and management of their ongoing forest enterprise that meet economic, social and environmental objectives.

  • To assist forest owners in the preparation for sustainable thinning, marketing, harvesting and re-establishing their forests.

  • To assist forest owner groups and other groups in the region as agreed with Head of Department.

  • To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan

  • Take responsibility for the marketing of services and contract with clients consistent with the achievement of the area income targets

  • Take responsibility for the marketing of training programmes

  • Liaison with relevant stakeholders in the industry and education sectors

  • Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must hold a relevant Level 8 Degree in Forestry or equivalent

  • Relevant post graduate qualification

Knowledge/Skills

  • Applicants must show excellent forestry knowledge and good experience of practical forestry and demonstrate that they can stay abreast of current schemes, best practices and research. 
  • They must be able to identify and shape the best practical applications of this knowledge in order to support landowners’ decision to plant, where appropriate and enhance the capabilities of forest owners.
  • They must act as an effective conduit to the latest thinking and methods focussed on providing owners or prospective forest owners with the capacity to optimise their forests.
  • Financial analysis and farm business planning
  • Experience in setting up and facilitating discussion groups
  • Established record of promoting grass budgeting

Other

  •  Advisors will be required to have their own transport and meet the full requirements for driving legally in Ireland currently and in the future.  Travel and subsistence expenses will be payable at approved public service rates. 

Eligibility

 

  • This is an open public competition. Should a current serving Teagasc staff member be successful in their application through open public competition for this post, their current contract of employment with Teagasc will come to an end on taking up this post.
