Job Description

Duration:
Temporary externally funded non Grant-in-Aid contract post, the indicative duration of which is 12 months, subject to contract.  A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.

 

Basic Function: 

The successful candidate will have proven microbiology/cell biology experience and expertise, ideally with preparation of samples for high throughput sequencing. The successful candidate would need to have exceptional laboratory abilities, a strong background in molecular biology, be a good communicator with a capacity to organise, manage and prioritise workload. 

 

Background: 

The successful candidate will be involved in a commercially funded project at the Teagasc Food Research Centre, Moorepark. This research project will focus on food digestion and the ability of compounds/digesta to modulate gut microbiome and the gut barrier, using in vitro models. Experiments will involve fecal fermentations with Micromatrix, quantification of satiety hormones from enteroendocrine cells, and culturing human intestinal cells (Caco2/HT29MTX).

 

 

Job Objectives

  • To assess modulation of the gut microbiome using ex-vivo gut models.
  • To collect and prepare samples for high throughput DNA sequencing of the microbiome.
  • To culture immortalized eukaryotic cell lines.
  • To perform DNA extractions, ELISA, enzyme activity assays and Real Time PCR.
  • To assist in the coordination, writing and submission of reports.
  • To perform general project management duties.
  • To liaise with the project leads and the industry partner.
  • To ensure GDRP compliance as necessary.
  • To monitor project budget and spend.
  • To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.
  • To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.
  • Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time

Qualifications

  • Candidates must have an honours Level 8 degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology or a related discipline.
  • A relevant post graduate degree, with wet lab research as a major component, would be a distinct advantage.

Skills

  • Accurate, with attention to detail and an ability to work independently and to tight deadlines

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with dynamic and diverse staff and management

  • Excellent laboratory skills in addition to excellent writing and organizational skills

 

  • Experience of working with in vitro digestion models or model gut systems.

  • Experience of preparation of samples for high throughput sequencing.

  • Experience of cell culture.

  • Experience of ELISA, enzyme assays and RT-PCR.

  • Experience of static in vitro gastrointestinal digestion (eg. INFOGEST).

  • Experience in interacting with commercial partners.

  • Aptitude for multidisciplinary approaches.

  • Proven record of scientific communications.

 

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of approaches to study gut microbial composition

  • Knowledge of model gut systems

  • Knowledge of cellular and molecular biology techniques

  • Knowledge of laboratory methodologies relating to biosciences

Eligibility This is an open public competition. Should a current serving Teagasc staff member be successful in their application through open public competition for this post, their current contract of employment with Teagasc will come to an end on taking up this post.
